Salvador sits on a peninsula overlooking
the bay that gave the state its name: Bahia. For Brazilians,
Bahia is synonymous both with a more relaxed pace of life and
a special intensity in all that Brazil represents: colour, music
and religiousness. This is undoubtedly a consequence of Salvador
being Brazil's strongest link with Africa, having been the principal
port of entry for slaves. Eighty percent of Salvador's inhabitants
are of Afro-Brazilian origin, and they express their cultural
roots in every way from their lively musical rhythms to their
cuisine.
Day 1: Salvador
Arrival at the airport, meet-and-greet
with our local, bilingual guide and transfer in private, air-conditioned
vehicle to the hotel. After check-in, free time to relax around
the hotel. In the evening, a wonderful dinner and spectacular
evening show, set in a beautiful 18th century architectural complex
comprising a main house (Casa Grande), a chapel and outlying
slave quarters, making it one of the most traditional entertainment
spots in Salvador. As the tourists help themselves to a self-service
buffet of typical traditional Bahian cuisine, a folklore show
presents some of the major Afro-Brazilian traditions, such as
the fishermen's dance, a special Capoeira performance and much
more. Overnight at the hotel
Day 2: Salvador
Full-day historical and panoramic tour
of Salvador: This charming excursion first takes the tourist
into the historical heart of Salvador The Cidade Alta,
revealing some of the first streets laid in Bahia. By far the
most significant site visited during the excursion is the Pelourinho,
the historical centre of Salvador and a true World Heritage Site,
considered by UNESCO to be a highlight of XVII and XVIII century
colonial architecture. Clinging to steep terrain, the picturesque
colonial houses and churches (such as the Igreja do São
Francisco) of the Pelourinho, artistically decorated in a myriad
of colours, make this enchanting part of town a must for anyone
visiting Bahia. Lunch is served at one of a choice of restaurants
in the Pelourinho, depending on the visitors' tastes. After lunch,
the excursion proceeds to offer the tourist various beautiful
panoramic views of the city.

Day 3, 4 & 5: Chapada Diamantina
The Chapada Diamantina (Diamond Highlands)
is a continuation of the Espinhaço Mountain Range in the
state of Bahia. Located 400 kilometres to the west of Salvador,
these highlands are an immense oasis with flowered hills, luxuriant
valleys and perennial rivers amid the barrenness of the backlands.
Visitors who climb the lush slopes feel as if they are in a make-believe
world: 84,000 square kilometres peppered with crystal-clear waterfalls,
gorges, caves, grottoes and rocky hills. In the middle of the
Chapada lies Lençóis, a precious town, nowadays
small and cosy, but once Brazil's diamond centre. To this day,
Lençóis has retained its characteristic architecture
and distinctive regional culture whilst developing the necessary
infrastructure to welcome visitors to the Chapada Diamantina
National Park. There are a number of hotels in Lençóis,
varying in comfort and style, from which visitors undertake numerous
excursions into the Chapada Diamantina National Park, including
half-day treks along creeks, amidst an imposing landscape of
high plateaus separated by deep gorges and valleys, exploration
of spectacular waterfalls and caves adorned with stalagmites,
stalactites and underground rivers. One of the excursions takes
the visitor to the top of the Morro de Pai Inácio escarpment
for amazing views over the surrounding landscape and a beautiful
sunset. All excursions are accompanied by an expert bilingual
guide. Transfers to and from Lençóis by bus.
Day 6: Chapada Diamantina - Manaus
Morning transfer to airport for the
flight to Manaus. On arrival, meet-and-greet with our local bilingual
guide and transfer to the hotel, followed by a city tour of Manaus
in the afternoon. The rubber boom, which started at the
end of 19th century and lasted for about 30 years, was largely
responsible for the way Manaus looks today, with its broad avenues
and squares. The opulent wealth of this period bequeathed a number
of architectural jewels such as the Rio Negro Palace; The Indian
Museum, with numerous works of art and tribal artefacts; and
the Adolfo Lisboa municipal market, where an astounding range
of products are sold. Other attractions include the Amazon Theatre,
opened in 1896, and the floating harbour of Manaus, which adjusts
itself to the water level. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7, 8 & 9: Manaus - Tefe - Uakari Floating Lodge
Morning transfer to Manaus Airport and
flight westwards to Tefé. Located on the banks of the
Solimões River in the remote heart of the Amazon basin,
Tefé is one of the oldest and most isolated towns in the
state of Amazonas, dating from 1686. From here, tourists board
a boat for the 2-hour trip to the Uakari Floating Lodge, during
which some wildlife, such as dolphins, can already be observed.
The lodge offers the unique possibility of experiencing the largest
reserve of flooded rainforest in the world, Mamirauá (1.124.000
ha). To enable scientists and tourists to explore the Mamirauá
Sustainable Development Reserve, a floating lodge with 10 apartments
was constructed to ensure minimal impact on the environment.
The lodge was named Uakari after the various types of Uakari
monkeys that live in this part of the rainforest. At the lodge,
tourist are explained the importance of this reserve and the
participatory projects that are being undertaken in alliance
with local communities and subsidized by the Brazilian government,
private organizations and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The simple yet comfortable lodge will be used as a base from
which to explore the rainforest and the projects that are undertaken
here, either on foot or by canoe, depending on the season. Excursions
include a walking tour to spot animals like spiders, opossums
and other night animals; jungle hikes through areas inhabited
by a variety of monkeys species; fishing for piranhas; a visit
by motorized canoe to Mamirauá Lake in search of fresh
water dolphins, hoatzins and, after sunset, alligators.
Day 10: Amazon - Pantanal
Transfer to Manaus airport for flight
to the Pantanal. Meet-and-greet at airport and transfer to one
of several beautifully located lodges. Overnight at the lodge.

Luxury Brazil Tours & Travel.
Day 11, 12 & 13: Pantanal
The Pantanal, a vast wetland area in
western Brazil, which cuts across the states of Mato Grosso and
Mato Grosso do Sul (as well as western Brazil and northeastern
Paraguay), is one of the world's great wildlife reserves. Because
of the veldt-like open land, it is also the best place to see
wildlife in Brazil. 650 species of birds, among which are storks
(including the stately Tuiuiu or Jabiru stork), egrets, herons,
coots, ducks and ibises, can be observed in the region. Animal
life is represented by, among other species, alligators, jaguar,
otters, emus, boa constrictors and monkeys. In the Pantanal,
and especially along the Transpantaneira Park Road, there are
numerous lodges located in magnificent spots, the accommodation
ranging from basic to luxurious according to customer preferences.
During their stay, tourists will embark on excursions involving
treks at sunrise to watch spectacular birds such as macaw, ibis
and Tuiuiú; a discovery tour on horseback and fascinating
canoe trips to enjoy the Pantanal and its wildlife from the water;
piranha fishing; plus a safari along the Transpantaneira Park
Road by car with several photo and film stops en route. The Transpantaneira
has been described by many as the best stretch of road for wildlife
spotting in South America. During the wet season, the road acts
as an island, attracting large numbers of birds and other wildlife,
whilst in the dry season, the roadside ditches act as ponds where
many birds, capybaras and caimans gather. Wildlife along the
Transpantaneira is therefore prolific and easily approached throughout
the year. Excursions are usually for half a day, returning to
the lodge for delicious buffet lunches and dinners.
Day 14: Pantanal - Your next destination
Time permitting, a free morning free
at leisure. Afternoon transfer to airport for connecting flights
back home.
